Where is Stone Mountain?
Stone Mountain Park is located 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta. It is a great place to stay if you want to visit Atlanta and the surrounding area.
How much does it cost to get into Stone Mountain Park?
There is a $20 entrance fee for the park. However, if you are staying at the camp ground, you will only need to pay this parking fee one time per your stay.
About Stone Mountain Park
At Stone Mountain Park you will find historical sites, hiking with miles of trails, wildlife viewing, family-friendly attractions, a campground, a golf course and great fishing. And of course the 600-foot granite dome known as Stone Mountain.

Among being a great place to visit for outdoor fun. Stone Mountain is also known for its massive stone carving of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. This memorial carving was completed in 1972 and can still be viewed today.
While at the park you can enjoy a variety of recreational activities. And with 3200 acres of natural beauty and park amenities, it is a great place to spend the day or a weekend while visiting the Atlanta Georgia area.
Attractions and Entertainment at Stone Mountain Park
Within the park you can find a variety of things to do. You can purchase an attractions pass to enjoy some of the paid attractions located in the park. Some of the top attractions include:


- Summit Skyride: Take the arial tram ride up and to the top of the mountain and learn interesting facts along the way.
- Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad: Enjoy a 5 mile scenic train ride around the base of the mountain in a full-size locomotive.
- Memorial Hall: Learn about the history of the memorial carving at the Stone Mountain Museum
- 4D Theatre: Grab your 4D glasses and enjoy a fun show.
- Laser Light Show: From April to October you can watch a laser show on the mountain. Viewing takes place at the Memorial Lawn.
How to get to the top of the mountain
There are 2 ways to get to the top of Stone Mountain.
- Ariel Tram: You can take the aerial tram up, located at the base of the mountain. It is a $20 round trip or $15 one way ride. When you get to the top you can either take the tram back down or hike down. Just note, the parking areas are in different locations, so will you will need to walk back to your car if you rode up and walked down.
- Hike Up: You can climb the 2.2 mile round trip trail up to the top. The climb up is steep in some parts. So make sure you have proper shoes if you plan climb up or down.


At the top there are amazing views and you can see the Atlanta skyline in the distance. There are also free use viewers to look around at the top. And at the mountain top building you will find restrooms, drinks and snacks.

Ways to Stay At Stone Mountain Campground
Stone mountain campground offers a variety of ways to stay from primitive sites to premium sites. And they even have RV rentals too.

You can stay at the campground with a motorhome, 5th wheel, travel trailer or pop up. And there are select sites that are large enough for big rigs.

The RV sites range from partial hook-ups to full hookups. And you can select pull through or back-in sites. Some spots even have nice views of Stone Mountain Lake and Stone Mountain.
The camping rates start at $28 for tents and pop ups and $44 for RV’s.
No RV? No problem. They offer primitive tent sites and a variety of other options. You can stay in their safari tents, yurt rentals or rv camper rentals.

At Your Site
All sites include picnic tables and fire ring and or grill. You also have access to wireless internet throughout the campground. And cable tv with limited channels.
And no need to find the dumpster. They pick up bagged trash from your site daily between 9am to 4pm.
Recreational Amenities

The campground offers a wide variety of activities. There are walking trails throughout the campground and into the park. Perfect for walking your dog around the park.

You also have access to a refreshing swimming pool, sand volleyball court and horseshoe court. And for the kids, there is a children’s playground.
Bath House & Laundry
The bath houses are located in every loop of the campground. So you never have to walk that far to access the hot showers and flush toilets. Some bath houses even have laundry facilities with washers and dryers, which is a nice amenity to have on site.
Other Amenities
The campground has a general store located near the campground entrance. At the camp store you will find an ATM, rv supplies and some food items. There is also an on site propane refill station and a dump station.
Our conclusion about Stone Mountain Park Campground
We really enjoyed our stay at Stone Mountain Park Campground. The sites are good size with lot of trees for shade. Some sites have great views and it is very quiet at night.
Our dog loved it with all the walking trails. The park trails are all dog friendly except the trail up Stone Mountain.
We had good cell service with T-mobile and wifi on our Verizon hot spot.
Our visit fell over the holiday so were able to enjoy the Stone Mountain Christmas festivities with the holiday themed attractions.
If you are on a road trip through the Atlanta area, it is an easy stop and I would definitely recommend the park.
