This downtown Austin RV Park is my #1 Choice for visiting the city. Because the location is AMAZING! Pecan Grove is a camping gem in the middle of the city. And somehow this little RV Park survived the growth of the city with newer buildings up all around it. The park has the basic amenities such as laundry facilities, showers and free wi-fi, but that’s not the reason you stay here….Its all about the great LOCATION!
The RV Park is a mixture of short terms and long term residents. Offering daily rates starting at $70 a night. With spaces available for motor homes, travel trailer and 5th wheels.
The park is located in Barton Springs, so it is just across the river from downtown and Lady Bird Lake. And once you arrive at the park, you can hang up the keys to your car as you can walk everywhere. And located just outside the entrance are scooters and bicycles for rent if you don’t have your own. Uber is also readily available. There are so many restaurants within walking distance, Best Places For Great Food In Barton Springs and miles of walking and the bike trail is just outside of the park. So yes, it is city camping. So expect some noise, expect some tight parking and older amenities. But we love it at Pecan Grove RV park because its the ideal place for easy access to the city!
TRAVEL TIP:
Try to approach from Lamar Street. If you approach from Zilker Park you will not be able to turn into the campground as there is a median in Barton Springs Road and the road is too narrow for a U Turn if you are towing.
2. Oak Forest RV Resort

The next closest option to staying near downtown Austin is Oak Forest RV Resort. I think this park has the best maintained grounds and great amenities of all the private campgrounds. They offer daily, weekly and long term rates. The daily rates start at $66.00. With over 200 sites available, this large RV park has many amenities. Some of the amenities include 2 pools, hot tub, laundry facility, cable tv, wifi, playground, picnic tables, showers, propane refill station, fitness center and a dog park.
The park grounds are well kept with trees and lots of grassy areas. Community areas include some seating around the park, shared bbq grill and monthly community events. The RV sites are all concrete pads and big rig friendly. Also, this park is part of the tiny home community so you will see some tiny homes located around the park and a new community across the street from the entrance.
3. Austin East KOA Holiday

Austin East KOA Holiday is just a short drive from Oak Forest RV Resort. This campground has a more rural feel, even though it is not far away. As with most KOA’s you are greeted with the cutest KOA store, this location is no different.
Offering spacious big rig friendly gravel pad sites with lots of grass and mature trees this park has more of a rural feel. With less than 100 sites now, the property does have plans to expand into two more phrases. The amenities include full hook-ups, a swimming pool, playground, laundry facilities, cable, dog park, wifi, showers, ice and firewood for sale. From the location, I would assume the road would have minimal noise at night.
TRAVEL TIP:
Sometimes the iphone map takes you to the wrong location because the property has plans to expand and it directs you to the future entrance off Decker Road.
Both Oak Forest and East KOA are located only minutes from Rodeo Austin, grocery shopping at JD’s Supermarket and gas stations. There are some restaurants in the area but none are walking distance from either.
4. Austin Lone Star RV Resort

On the south side of the city are the next two campgrounds. Austin Lone Star is conveniently located directly off the interstate, so if you are just passing through, this is a great option because of the easy interstate access. Offering daily and weekly rates starting at $65.00 per night, the campground is a mixture of short term and long term residents. Some of the amenities include full hookups, pool, laundry, showers, wifi, fitness center, dog park, propane filling on site with gated access. The property has some trees with shade and a combination of grass and gravel at the sites with either gravel, asphalt or concrete for the RV pad.
HEB grocery store is located just down the street along with a huge variety of all kinds of stores just minutes away. This property also offers discounts to Good Sam members, AAA and Military.
5. McKinney Falls State Park: The 2nd Best of RV Parks in Austin

Although this park is the farthest away from the ones I visited, this is my SECOND FAVORITE campground. Mostly because it was so green and lush with lots of trees and privacy between the sites. As most state parks, it is very busy and reservations 5 months in advance are suggested. There are 81 sites with electric (30 and 50 amp available) and water hook with a dump station on site starting at $20 per night.
Amenities in the park include hot showers, hiking trails, biking, birding, swimming in the river, fishing, playground, picnic area and park store. It is a lovely state park! And if peace near the city is what you desire, then I would highly recommend this park.
